Chapter Twelve
âSo howâs he doing?â Donna asked, squirting ketchup onto a pile of French fries.
âLast I heard the doctor still hasnât cleared him to return to work, and he says heâs going crazy,â Sarah said. âBut heâs keeping busy with wedding plans.â
âOh, god, Sarah, are you ever going to tell him?â Donna groaned.
âItâs not my place to,â Sarah answered.
âThen whose place is it?â Donna demanded. âGirl, if you donât tell him, heâs going to end up making the biggest mistake of hisâ¦â
âShh!â Sarah suddenly hissed.
Donnaâs eyes traveled in the direction of Sarahâs, and she tried to figure out what Sarah was staring at so intently.
âWhat?â Donna asked.
âThatâs her!â Sarah whispered. âThatâs Lacey! And sheâs with that guy from the cafeteria!â
Donnaâs eyes bulged as she tried awkwardly to glance over her shoulder at the couple without being seen.
Sarah strained to listen to their conversation. It was nearly impossible to hear them over the cacophony of voices and clattering dishes that filled the restaurant, but she managed to hear bits and pieces.
ââ¦didnât work, clearly!â the guy hissed.
ââ¦your fault!... inept, shoddy job⦠insurance money would be mine right now if you hadnât botchedâ¦â she heard Lacey growling.
ââ¦try again when heâs back at work⦠youâll get your money next timeâ¦â the guy said, taking Laceyâs hand and kissing it.
Sarah quickly raised a menu in front of her face as Laceyâs eyes glanced cautiously around. Lacey muttered something and pulled her loverâs hand, leading him out of the restaurant. Had she seen Sarah?
âDid you hear that?â Sarah whispered to Donna.
âSome,â Donna said. âWhat do you think it meant?â
âThat fire at the bowling alley was no accident,â Sarah said as her lunch began to creep upward. âIâm going to be sick.â
Clutching her stomach, Sarah dashed toward the restroom. She pushed her way into a stall and fell to her knees just in time to lose everything sheâd eaten. As she wiped her mouth with a wad of toilet paper, she kept going over everything sheâd heard. Maybe she heard wrong? No, Donna seemed to have heard the same thing, hadnât she? It was all too much. She had to get to the bottom of it, and fast. Lukeâs life could be in danger!
She made her way back to the table, and Donna immediately asked, âWhat are you going to do?â
âWell, first I need to warn Luke,â Sarah said. âAfter that, I have to figure out what theyâve done and what theyâre up to.â
âAre you sure youâre not just overreacting?â Donna asked.
âYou heard the same thing I did,â Sarah replied pointedly.
âOk. Fair enough. Need my help?â Donna asked.
âIâd rather not get you involved,â Sarah said. âBut Iâll let you know.â
âIâm here if you need me,â Donna said. âGood luck.â
Sarah tossed a twenty onto the table to pay for both lunches, and before Donna could protest, she snatched up her purse and headed for the door. She was on a mission.
